American Lucas Glover surged into a one-shot lead over countryman Ricky Barnes at the end of day two of the US Open at Bethpage.

Glover was six under overall after 13 holes of his second round when play was halted at 2024 local time (0124 BST) following Thursday's rain delay.

Barnes reached five under after nine, with Sweden's Peter Hanson and first-round leader Mike Weir at four under.

Tiger Woods will start his second round on Saturday 10 shots adrift.

The 14-time major champion completed a first-round 74 on Friday morning after only three hours' play was possible because of heavy rain and waterlogging on Thursday.

"I was right there where I needed to be, and two bad shots and a mud ball later, here we go and I'm at four over par," Woods said.

No one has ever come back from so far behind after the first round to win the US Open - Jack Fleck's nine-stroke deficit in the 1955 tournament is the record.

Woods's half of the 156-man field has yet to begin their second rounds and will have to make up ground on the leaders amid forecasts of heavy rain again on Saturday.

Hanson, who fired a hole in one to grab the last US Open spot on offer at final qualifying in England last month, expects Woods to be in the hunt for the final round.

"Everybody knows he's going to be there come Sunday afternoon," Hanson said.

The players who missed the worst of Thursday's deluge made the most of the pleasant, sunny conditions on Friday afternoon and 2003 Masters champion Weir edged the lead to six under after round one before faltering late on and seeing Glover romp past in round two.

"The key to making birdies is hit it in the fairway and I've been doing that for the most part," Glover said.

"I drove it great this afternoon, and I've been putting well, Greens have been receptive."

American Todd Hamilton, the surprise 2004 Open champion, ended three under after 10 holes of his second round, while England's Ross Fisher was in a group on two under.

Phil Mickelson, thriving on the goodwill of the New York crowds who were vocal in their support of him and wife Amy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, ended in a group one under.

The 2001 Open champion David Duval, who has plummeted down the rankings from number one in 1999, will also resume on one under.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell will start his second round on the same score after a completing an opening 69 on Friday morning.

England's Ian Poulter is level after a first-round 70, while Spain's world number four Sergio Garcia and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy are one over after 11 and 12 holes respectively of their second rounds.

Garcia, still chasing a maiden major after a host of near-misses, had climbed to one under but three-putted from about four feet on the 18th green, his ninth.

England's world number three Paul Casey (+5) has yet to start his second round, while Ireland's Padraig Harrington, the reigning Open and USPGA champion, will start 12 shots back after a disappointing opening 76.

Play for those who have already begun their second rounds starts again at 0730 local time (1230 BST) on Saturday before the remainder start teeing off from 1000 (1500 BST).
