Ex-Wales hooker Garin Jenkins feels poor selection for the British and Irish Lions' first Test against South Africa led to their series defeat.

Jenkins believes Welsh front-rowers Adam Jones and Matthew Rees should have been picked for the opening Test.

He said: "We missed the chance in the first Test. I think it was poor selection, really."

Jenkins, who was gouged himself at the 1999 World Cup, said weak officiating in the second Test also hurt the Lions.

He also thinks the first Test man-of-the-match display by prop Tendai 'The Beast' Mtawarira, who inflicted damage on the Lions scrum in Durban, masked the South Africans' true weakness in that area.

The ex-Wales hooker says coach Ian McGeechan put the matter right for Saturday's often brutal, but compelling encounter in Pretoria by bringing in Jones and Rees.

But he added: "I think there was so much pride shown Saturday. I think we missed the chance in the first Test. I think it was poor selection, really.

"It was well documented that if the Springboks had a weak part, it was their scrum. The Beast - as they've named him - isn't a great scrummager... and I think the Lions knew that they held the upper hand there.

"I don't know whether they [the Lions] worked on it hard enough, worked on their strengths in the first Test, which, really, looking back on the series, is where the series was won - in that first 20 minutes in Durban.

"And it was poor selection as proved Saturday when the Lions got the selection right with Matthew Rees and Adam Jones there at two and three.

"That allowed the Lions a platform and it's a missed opportunity. I'd put the Test series down to poor selection in the first Test."

Jones was among the walking wounded in the wake of the 28-25 second Test defeat, the victim of the challenge that led to Springbok second-row Bakkies Botha being cited and banned for two weeks for dangerous charging.

However, the most controversial incident took place in the first minute when Schalk Burger was sin-binned for eye-gouging wing Luke Fitzgerald.

The flanker has since been banned for eight weeks following a citing hearing.

Having been the victim of a similarly infamous incident himself, in the opening World Cup game against Argentina in 1999, Jenkins says French referee Philippe Berdos and touch-judge Bryce Lawrence should have acted more strictly in Pretoria.

"It was certainly a physical game, wasn't it? The intensity was over and above what we've seen in recent times," said Jenkins.

He added: "The South Africans have always been very physical in their 120 years of rugby history, but on Saturday it was real boundary stuff.

"I just think some times things are done in the heat of the moment.

"I know Schalk Burger's very physical and there's no place in the game for gouging.

"He [Berdos] should have issued a red card and Bryce Lawrence... should have been as authoritative in insisting it was a red card to the referee as he was implementing the scrum tactics the week before in Durban when he penalised the Lions off the park.

"But I just think it was weak refereeing and it was very costly to the end of the game to the Lions."

Brazil denied the United States a shock victory by coming back from two goals down to win the Confederations Cup.

A Clint Dempsey flick and a Landon Donovan strike on the counter put the US into a surprise 2-0 half-time lead.

Luis Fabiano pulled one back for Brazil before Kaka was denied an equaliser when his header was wrongly judged not to have crossed the line.

Luis Fabiano's headed second levelled matters before, five minutes from time, Lucio nodded in a corner to win it.

After upsetting the odds so spectacularly with their 2-0 semi-final victory over Spain, the US almost tore up the script again, against opponents who had beaten them 3-0 in the group stage of the competition.

Predictably, favourites Brazil had the lion's share of possession, but the incisive football was played by the American underdogs throughout the first half.

Indeed, with their first attack the US scored.

Jonathan Spector launched a cross from deep at Dempsey, whose swinging volley made the faintest of touches to direct the ball past Julio Cesar.

Even at such an early stage, it was clear that Brazil were waiting for one of their leading lights to create something from nothing as opposed to taking collective responsibility.

Three times their star-turn Kaka created chances for others, firstly Robinho, then Felipe Melo and finally Maicon, but each time American goalkeeper Tim Howard was equal to the final shot.

After 25 minutes, Brazil were made to pay for their profligacy as the USA launched a superb counter-attack which resulted in a superb second goal.

Donovan found Charlie Davies on the left wing, whose incisive return pass found Donovan in space and bearing down on goal but still with plenty to do.

The striker's touch took him away from the covering Ramires and his next touch was a perfectly placed side-foot shot past Cesar.

With seconds remaining in the half Brazil almost clawed back what would have been a barely merited goal when Maicon got round the back of the American defence, but his cross was deflected away from the lurking Fabiano by Carlos Bocanegra.

Barely a minute into the second half, the dynamic of the game changed as Felipe Melo fed Luis Fabiano, who swivelled sharply and shot past Howard.

With the momentum now in their favour, Brazil attacked with regularity and were mistakenly denied parity on the hour as Kaka's far post header from an Andre Santos cross was pushed clear by Howard, but replays showed that the ball had crossed the line.

Luis Fabiano had a chance to equalise when he was played in on goal by substitute Elano - and played onside by Oguchi Onyewu - but Howard was quick off his line to smother the ball before the striker could shoot.

With 15 minutes to go Luis Fabiano did pull his side level.

Kaka drove in from the left and crossed for Robinho whose shot hit the underside of the bar but bounced nicely for Luis Fabiano who made no mistake in nodding the ball past the diving Howard.

With Brazil now in the ascendancy, the US were unable to hold out, and five minutes from time the turnaround was complete.

Elano's outswinging corner was met by the unmarked Lucio and his powerful header struck the inside of Howard's right-hand post on its way in to break American hearts.

"That defeat really hurt.

"I'm extremely proud of my players, but it still feels pretty lousy to let this one get away.

"I hope though that people around the world see we have good team and great players and it is a big step forward."

Brazil coach Dunga:

"Even after we went 2-0 down the team was still sure of itself. We told them at half-time to play down the wings, keep patient.

"We did that, we have been together for 29 days and we were determined to win it.

"It is very difficult to overcome a 2-0 deficit, it is not easy, but if you have committed players who never give up then you have a chance and we came back in the second half. We showed a high level of professionalism."

Eto'o may be set to grace the Premier League next season

Manchester City have bid in the region of £25m for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, BBC Radio 5 Live understands.

The Spanish club's president Joan Laporta claimed City have made the 28-year-old Cameroon international a "stratospheric offer" to join them.

Reports have suggested the Eastlands club have offered Eto'o wages of up to £250,000 per week, which would make him the highest-paid player in the world.

City refused to confirm or deny that they have made an offer.

Eto'o joined Barcelona in 2004, signing from Mallorca for a fee of about £16m, and has since scored more than 100 goals in his five seasons with the club.

He helped the Catalan side to win a treble trophy haul of the Spanish league title, domestic cup and Champions League in the 2008-2009 campaign.

Eto'o scored the opening goal in the Champions League final in Rome as Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0.

In doing so he became only the second player, after Raul, to score in two Champions League finals because Eto'o was also on target in Barcelona's 2-1 victory against Arsenal in 2006.

Already this summer City have signed striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn for £18m and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry for £12m.

And it is believed City are also chasing Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez, who is soon to be out of contract, and Everton defender Joleon Lescott.

Fernando Torres has recommended three of his Spanish international team-mates to Rafael Benitez in the hope that the Liverpool manager will sign one.

The striker insists any one of Valencia attacking trio David Silva, Juan Mata or David Villa would help the Reds win a first top-flight title in 20 years.

"I have recommended Silva, Mata or Villa to Benitez and I hope we have the money to buy them," said Torres.

"They're small players with quality and maybe they can make the difference."

Liverpool have already shown interest in 27-year-old striker Villa, who is also a target of Chelsea and Spanish side Real Madrid.

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson believes Stuart Pearce can make the step up from national under-21 coach to first team manager.

Pearce has guided his side to the final of the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden, where they will face Germany on Monday.

And Eriksson told BBC Sport: "If he has proven it at under-21 why shouldn't he be able to do it with the senior team?

"Yes it's a big step, but I think he can do it in the future. Why not?"

The 47-year-old works with senior coach Fabio Capello on England duty and is seen by Eriksson as a potential successor to the Italian.

Pearce's side reached the final with a victory on penalties over Sweden after letting slip a 3-0 half-time lead.

"I'm sorry they knocked out Sweden, but its good for England. Reaching the final of a European Championships is fantastic," said Swedish-born Eriksson, who became England's first foreign manager when he succeeded Kevin Keegan in January 2001.

He lifted England from 17th to fourth in the world rankings, but they were knocked out of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and 2004 European Championships at the quarter-final stage.

Eriksson left the England job at the end of the 2006 World Cup and took over as Manchester City manager one year later in July 2007.

He guided them to ninth and a first league double over Manchester United since the 1969/70 season, but then left to take over as Mexico coach.

However, in April of this year, only 10 months after accepting the job, Eriksson was sacked.

He is still looking for a new job and expressed his desire to return to England.

"I would like to return to the Premier League but I think if you put that question to more or less every manager in the world, then they would like to do it as well," he said.

However, he admitted that he had not had any offers recently.

The British and Irish Lions have lost both props for the third and final Test against South Africa next weekend.

Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones were both injured in the 28-25 second-Test defeat and had operations on Saturday, with five Lions sent to hospital in total.

Jenkins has a broken cheekbone and Jones dislocated his shoulder.

Brian O'Driscoll (concussion) and Jamie Roberts (wrist) are major doubts, but Ronan O'Gara (eye cut) and Tommy Bowe (elbow) should be fit for selection.

Head coach Ian McGeechan, who confirmed the Lions would not be calling up any replacements, said the loss of Jenkins, Jones, O'Driscoll and Roberts had a major bearing on the second Test.

"There is no doubt the four serious injuries affected the tempo of our game and our decision-making and accuracy," he said.

"I don't think the uncontested scrums helped us either. We were working the big Boks forwards around and it became a soft platform after that.

"Losing the two props was a massive blow. I think the game would have been different if they had stayed on."

Jenkins was injured in a clash of heads with Springboks winger Bryan Habana while Jones left the field at the same time, forcing the introduction of uncontested scrums, after being taken out by Bakkies Botha.

The Springbok lock was cited for the incident, while his team-mate Schalk Burger was also charged following an incident in the first minute of the match.

Lions doctor James Robson said: "It certainly was a fairly brutal game.

"As the casualty list goes it is not something I am happy with. To lose two of our most colourful characters in Gethin and Adam is distressing.

"Gethin has had a plastic plate inserted. The timescale for his recovery is six to eight weeks.

"We couldn't get Adam's shoulder to pop back in at the stadium and he was required to go to theatre. He will be subject to further investigation and specialist opinion.

"Brian is very much alert and conscious today (Sunday) but he is subject to the usual return-to-play protocol."

Saturday's defeat in Pretoria means the Lions head to Johannesburg for the third Test with the hosts holding a decisive 2-0 lead in the series.

Spain secured victory over hosts South Africa in the Confederations Cup third-place play-off courtesy of a Xabi Alonso extra-time free-kick.

South African substitute Katlego Mphela opened the scoring in the second half, lashing in a Siphiwe Tshabalala cross.

Two goals in two minutes from Daniel Guiza seemed to have won it for Spain until Mphela crashed home an injury-time free-kick to force extra-time.

But Alonso curled in a set-piece in the second period of extra-time to win it.

For much of normal time this game was a typically drab third-place play-off, with European Champions Spain - whose 35-match unbeaten run came to a shock end against the United States in the semi-final - particularly lethargic.

The closest either side came to a goal in the first half was a Matthew Booth snap shot that fizzed past the post for the home side.

Spain were brighter in the second half, with Albert Riera forcing a smart save from Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

However, it was the home side who took the lead when Tshabalala was released wide left and his cross was firstly controlled by Mphela before being crashed into the roof of the net by the striker.

It looked like being the only goal of the game until Guiza's late show.

The substitute striker turned in a Santi Cazorla cross with his right foot into the bottom left-hand corner in the 88th minute.

Barely a minute later he had put Spain into the lead, when what appeared to have been a cross beat Khune, clipped the far upright and went in.

It appeared as though this would be enough to win the match for Spain, but with the final kick of the match, three minutes into injury-time, Mphela lashed in a spectacular 25-yard free-kick to extend matters by a further 30 minutes.

In an understandably nervy extra-time, Liverpool midfielder Alonso had the final say, with a smart, curling free-kick that beat attackers and defenders alike to find the far right corner of the net.

Floyd Mayweather Jr's comeback bout against Juan Manuel Marquez has been rescheduled for 19 September.

The undefeated five-weight champion was due to fight Mexico's Marquez on 18 July but pulled out with a rib injury.

Mayweather has not fought since beating Britain's Ricky Hatton in a December 2007 welterweight bout.

"I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing's pound-for-pound king all in one night," said the 32-year-old.

"I am relieved to be cleared to fight as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring."

The 12-round bout will be staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as originally planned.

It is seen as a stepping stone for Mayweather to an eventual showdown with Filipino star Manny Pacquiao, his successor in the pound-for-pound rankings.

He will fight Marquez - the WBO and WBA lightweight champion - on the weekend after Mexican Independence Day.

"I am happy that Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business," said Marquez, nicknamed 'Dinamita'.

British middleweight James DeGale is set to train and spar with undefeated five-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr at the end of July.

DeGale, who won Olympic gold in 2008, will first meet Irishman Ciaran Healey at Manchester's MEN Arena on 18 July in his third professional bout.

"We have an option to train with Mayweather in Vegas," said DeGale.

"To be in the gym with Floyd will be unbelievable. Floyd is one of my favourite fighters ever."

DeGale and his trainer Jim McDonnell met Mayweather during the American's public workout in London last month when the idea was agreed.

"He's a boxer who can dig deep when he needs to. Mayweather is a proper showman - I love his attitude. He has all the skills," added the 23-year-old.

"If I'm half the fighter he is, I'll be cool."

Valentino Rossi romped to his 100th career victory as he won the Dutch MotoGP at Assen to go clear in the MotoGP world championship standings.

The reigning world champion came home ahead of Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, with Australia's Casey Stoner, who led early on, finishing third.

Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso crashed out from threatening positions on the same corner.

Their exits helped James Toseland to sixth, his best result of the season.

"I'm so happy, it was a great race," Rossi told BBC Sport.

"I felt good from the first lap, so I decided to push to the maximum.

"I know Jorge Lorenzo is hard to beat but I have great pace, the tyres worked very well and Yamaha is fantastic on this track."

His victory was a lot more straight forward than his dramatic win over Lorenzo in Barcelona, and he joked "this was more boring from the outside, but another battle with Jorge like that is too much for old people like my grandmother."

Stoner's third place finish was all the more impressive considering he was suffering from stomach cramps for the second consecutive race, and after the race he was clearly in pain.

"It's not my fitness, I know I've trained hard enough, it's something a bit strange", said the Australian.

"Luckily the bike was working well on a bad day."

Once Rossi got past Stoner there was no great battle for the podium places, with the main area of excitement being the battle for sixth place.

Toseland was at the front of the pack for a lot of the time, holding off the attentions of Mika Kallio, but going into the closing stages, it seemed his chance of sixth place was gone.

But Toni Elias and Loris Capirossi went on to the grass at the final corner, opening the door for Toseland to go through, and Kallio skidded off into the gravel and failed to finish.

"I was getting ready to pass Mika at the last corner when Elias came under me at Turn 10. That let Loris through too and I'd gone from sixth to ninth!," said Toseland.

"It was so chaotic I didn't even see Kallio crash and I thought when Elias dived under Loris at the last chicane that they might run off. Fortunately for me they did and I took advantage - leading that group for so long, I think I deserved sixth."

Earlier, in the 125cc race, Spain's Sergio Gadea claimed his first win of the season as he came home ahead of Nico Terol and Julian Simon, with Bradley Smith fourth.

But Smith was promoted to a podium position after Terol was penalised 20 seconds for a clash with Gadea.

That result ensures Smith remains in close contention in the 125cc championship standings.

And Hiroshi Aoyama took the lead in the 250cc standings after winning his race, ahead of Hector Barbera and Marco Simoncelli.

Previous championship leader Alvaro Bautista failed to finish after hitting the back of Aoyama's bike.

South Africa celebrate avenging their series defeat in 1997

The British and Irish Lions' hopes of squaring the series in South Africa ended in heart-breaking fashion as replacement Springboks fly-half Morne Steyn landed a winning penalty with the last kick of a thrilling second Test in Pretoria.

Ian McGeechan's side succumbed in the cruellest conceivable manner to put the seal on a third consecutive series defeat for the tourists.

Steyn's monumental kick from 53m ensured the world champions earned a measure of revenge for their 1997 defeat by the Lions, who led until the 74th minute before the video referee ruled Jaque Fourie had scored for the Boks in the right corner.

Steyn's touchline conversion saw the hosts edge in front 25-22, but a Stephen Jones penalty with three minutes left levelled the scores.

A draw would have kept the series alive until the deciding Test in Johannesburg next Saturday, but it was not to be.

South Africa manufactured a drop-goal attempt for Steyn with a minute left, but the replacement fly-half's effort fell short.

Ronan O'Gara, on for the injured Jamie Roberts, retrieved the kick and opted to launch a high up-and-under rather than aim for touch.

He chased his own kick, but only succeeded in stumbling into Fourie Du Preez as he claimed it in the air.

Referee Christophe Berdos deemed it a penalty and Morne Steyn, a hero with the local Bulls fans, coolly stroked over the kick to send them into raptures, and shatter the Lions.

Such an outcome appeared unlikely for most of the match as the Lions dominated for large periods.

Rob Kearney's early converted try, and two penalties and a drop-goal from Stephen Jones, gave them a 16-8 half-time lead which Jones extended to 19-8 on the hour.

But the world champions fought back superbly in the final quarter as tries from Bryan Habana and Fourie, both converted by Morne Steyn, who added two vital penalties, steered them home.

The match got off to an explosive start when Schalk Burger, who led his side onto the field on the occasion of his 50th cap, was removed from it within the first minute.

The Lions had conceded a penalty but it was reversed when touch judge Bryce Lawrence adjudged the celebrated flanker had raked his finger across the eyes of Lions wing Luke Fitzgerald.

If so, it was difficult to see why French referee Christophe Berdos did not produce a red card, but Jones knocked over the penalty to give the Lions the early momentum.

From Kearney's counter-attack, Tommy Bowe raced into the line and fed Gethin Jenkins, but the Welsh prop delayed his pass to the onrushing Roberts as a try beckoned.

The Boks appeared rattled by the early onslaught and a dust-up saw Victor Matfield shove Brian O'Driscoll and Juan Smith swing an arm at the Lions centre, whose response was to mouth "Bring it on!" at his would-be assailants.

The Lions' try in the seventh minute featured a brilliant offload from Stephen Jones out the back of his hand to Kearney, who left Frans Steyn unsure whether to make the tackle with Bowe lurking, allowing the full-back to reach over in the right corner.

Jones converted superbly from the touchline to make it 10-0 in eight minutes, a complete reversal from the woeful start in Durban a week ago.

Simon Shaw, making his Lions Test debut at the age of 35, put his giant frame about to good effect with some early charges, while the tourists sought to spread the ball wide at every opportunity.

But having conceded 10 points with Burger off the field, the Boks scored immediately upon his return.

Smith won a line-out at the tail and scrum-half Du Preez released Pietersen, who picked a superb angle to ease past Fitzgerald and over to the right of the posts.

Ruan Pienaar missed the relatively straightforward conversion, the first of three costly misses by the Boks fly-half before he was replaced on the hour.

The Lions were then grateful to Fitzgerald as he retrieved a chip ahead from Pietersen after a cross-kick from Pienaar, giving South Africa a 5m scrum.

But after the problems the Lions endured in the first Test, they won a vital penalty when Bismarck Du Plessis and John Smit popped up at the collision.

O'Gara's careless late challenge gave the Boks the decisive shot at goal

Andrew Sheridan came on for a powerful cameo after replacing a bloodied Jenkins, and the Lions were denied a second try when Pierre Spies brought down O'Driscoll with a superb tackle after the centre had released Fitzgerald down the left wing.

But the tourists recycled patiently and took play through 13 phases before Jones, in acres of space, landed a simple drop-goal from 15m to extend the lead to 18-5.

Francois Steyn kept the Boks in touch at the interval with a mammoth 55m penalty with the last kick of the half.

The third quarter featured a litany of injuries as Jenkins clashed heads with Habana and left the fray for good five minutes into the second half.

With fellow prop Adam Jones also going off with a sprained shoulder, there were uncontested scrums for the final 35 minutes.

The Lions suffered two let-offs when Pienaar missed two long-range penalties within four minutes.

And it appeared the match was swinging decisively their way when Boks captain John Smit was penalised on the hour and Jones stroked over his third penalty to give the Lions an 11-point cushion going into the final quarter.

But after a sickening collision between O'Driscoll and Danie Rossouw resulted in both players collapsing to the ground, before being forced off, the Boks struck.

Spies picked up off the back of an uncontested scrum and fed the electric Habana, who arrowed through the Lions midfield and held off Kearney's last-ditch tackle to stretch over.

Morne Steyn, on at fly-half for Pienaar, converted to trim the gap to four points, but with the pressure mounting on the Lions, Boks hooker Du Plessis opted to run a kickable penalty and the tourists turned it over.

Roberts followed O'Driscoll off the field, resulting in a centre partnership of Stephen Jones and Bowe for the last 13 minutes, with O'Gara coming on at fly-half.

It proved an unfortunate cameo for the Irishman. Jones kicked his fifth penalty to make it 22-18 to the Lions with 10 minutes left, but O'Gara then missed a tackle on the powerful Fourie.

Mike Phillips's last-ditch tackle ultimately proved unsuccessful and after several minutes of deliberation, television match official Stuart Dickinson awarded the try, with apparently no decisive replay that could either confirm or rule out whether he had gone into touch in the act of scoring.

Morne Steyn's touchline conversion suddenly left the Lions five minutes to manufacture a score to keep the series alive.

A high tackle by replacement Boks lock Andries Bekker on Stephen Jones saw the Welshman haul himself up to level the scores.

But it was South Africa who were handed a chance to win the game, and Morne Steyn gratefully accepted the opportunity to win the series for the world champions.

England Under-21s set up a European Championship final against Germany with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Sweden despite losing a 3-0 half-time lead.

Martin Cranie's strike, a Nedum Onuoha shot and a Mattias Bjarsmyr own goal put England in control at the break.

A revitalised Sweden forced extra-time after Ola Toivonen's free-kick and two Marcus Berg goals levelled the score.

Frazier Campbell saw red, but England held on to set up a final with Germany, who beat Italy 1-0 in their semi-final.

England had fallen at the semi-final stage of this 31-year-old tournament five times, including a 13-12 penalty defeat to the Netherlands two years ago.

But they were able to put that long-running hoodoo to bed after Guillermo Molin's miss from the penalty spot sealed their win.

The home side had secured their own passage to the last four only 72 hours earlier, courtesy of a bruising 3-1 victory over Serbia and England caught the hosts napping after just a minute.

James Milner delivered an outswinging corner which fell at the feet of full-back Cranie on the edge of the box and his effort beat Swedish keeper Johan Dahlin and a covering defender to find the net.

Once the game settled, England emerged as the dominant force in it, working hard to retain possession and then looking to utilise the pace of their forward line on the break.

The only sour note of the first 45 minutes was the booking of Gabriel Agbonlahor for using an arm when challenging aerially with Bjarsmyr, ruling him out of the final.

Bjarsmyr was forced to leave the field for treatment and England took almost immediate advantage of their numerical superiority, again from a corner.

Milner delivered and inattentive Swedish defending allowed Onuoha to control the ball, and strike a swivelled shot into the corner of the net.

If Bjarsmyr's absence was to blame for the second goal, England's third owed entirely to his presence as, in attempting to clear, his swinging left foot diverted an Onuoha header from Lee Cattermole's right-wing cross into his own net.

Cattermole almost made it four on the stroke of half-time but his fierce strike from a neat Agbonlahor lay-off flew just over.

Theo Walcott's pace created a number of openings for himself throughout the second half, but each time his shooting let him down.

England paid the price for such profligacy as Sweden - galvanised by substitutes Labinot Harbuzi, Robin Soder and Molins - gradually chipped away at the deficit.

With 20 minutes remaining, Molins beat Kieran Gibbs down the right and his cross was slotted in by Berg from eight yards out.

Seven minutes later Onuoha fouled Toivonen 22 yards out and the Swedish midfielder picked himself up and fired the resulting free-kick past Joe Hart to make it 3-2.

And Sweden - benefitting from England's inability to retain possession - grabbed a deserved equaliser on 81 minutes when Soder flicked the ball back at the far post and Berg was on hand to crash his seventh goal of the tournament into the roof of the net.

England's task in extra-time was made all the harder when substitute Campbell picked up his second booking for a lunging foul on Mikael Lustig.

Predictably, Sweden came closest to winning the game but Berg was denied a hat-trick when his header struck the crossbar and Hart was able to tip a 25-yard shot from Harbuzi over the bar.

The record of England's senior team in penalty shoot-outs is far from impressive, while memories of the heartbreaking defeat for the Under-21s two years ago were also fresh in the mind of England fans as the game went to penalties.

Milner gave England the worst possible start, slipping and horribly miscuing his penalty high and wide.

But the hosts were unable to capitalise though as Berg's penalty was saved by Hart.

The teams then traded four successful penalties each, during which Hart was booked for straying off his line to earn a yellow card that will keep him out of the final, although Pearce has stated he intends to appeal the decision.

Gibbs slotted England's sixth penalty but Molins' effort struck the outside of the post to give England victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo will complete his world record £80m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid on 1 July after agreeing a six-year deal.

United, who accepted Real's offer for the 24-year-old winger on 11 June, confirmed on their website that the transfer had been finalised.

A statement on Real's website read: "The player will be tied to Real Madrid for the next six seasons.

"He will be presented on 6 July at the Santiago Bernabeu."

Ronaldo was on holiday in the United States at the time the offer was made by Real, on 10 June.

During that time, United stated that the decision came at the Portugal international's request after he "again expressed his desire to leave".

The Old Trafford club said the offer was unconditional and wanted the matter to be concluded by 30 June.

The addition of Ronaldo to the Real ranks is part of a remarkable spending spree by the Spanish giants since Florentino Perez returned as club president on 1 June.

He brought in Brazil playmaker Kaka for a then-world record £56m, then Ronaldo for £80m before signing centre-back Raul Albiol from Valencia for £12m, to bring Real's total summer spend, so far, to £148m.

Perez appointed Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini as Real's new coach, and had previously made it clear he would do "everything possible" to sign Ronaldo.

Reports have suggested that the midfielder will earn about £11m per year, which will make him the highest paid footballer in the world. He was on about £6.38m at Old Trafford.

The current top earner is understood to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is on about £10m per year.

Despite the vast outgoings, Madrid have also been linked with Liverpool's Xabi Alonso, Valencia's David Villa and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.

Ronaldo joined United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2m, but was strongly linked with a move to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2008.

United lodged a complaint with world governing body Fifa last June over what they believed was a deliberate attempt by Real to unsettle the winger.

After a long, drawn-out saga that ran through the summer months, the Portugal international insisted he was happy at Old Trafford and remained at United for the 2008-2009 season.

And despite Ronaldo's claim that he wanted to remain at Old Trafford, he was the subject of constant speculation during the 2008-2009 season and often issued mixed messages about his future.

It took time for Ronaldo to find his best form after arriving in England but he became a pivotal player for United, who have won the last three Premier League titles.

In 2007-08, he scored 42 goals, which topped the previous club record for a midfielder held by George Best, and was on the score sheet as United defeated Chelsea in the Champions League final.

His form through 2008 saw him named Fifa World Player of the Year in January, just a month after he won the Ballon d'Or as the European Player of the Year.

Ronaldo was the top scorer for his club last season, with 26 goals, taking his total for United to 118 in 292 appearances.

Defender Johnson has become an England regular

England right-back Glen Johnson has signed a four-year deal with Liverpool after completing a reported £17.5m move from Portsmouth.

The 24-year-old becomes manager Rafael Benitez's first summer signing after the Reds boss beat off competition from Chelsea and Manchester City.

Benitez said: "Sometimes you have to spend a little bit more.

"You can't compete in the top four of the Premier League unless you spend some money."

It is understood Pompey still owe Liverpool £7m from the deal that saw them buy striker Peter Crouch last summer, and that is believed to have helped finance Johnson's transfer.

Johnson had limited first-team chances at Chelsea in his spell there, but established himself in the England team after his move to Portsmouth in 2007.

Portsmouth paid £4m for Johnson, who emerged as Benitez's prime target after having an outstanding season at Fratton Park last season.

"It was down to the player whether he chose us or City or Chelsea and he chose us," Benitez told the Liverpool website. "It was very clear from talking to him that he wanted to play for Liverpool.

"He was important at Chelsea and in the last year at Portsmouth he has improved and is much better.

"One of the main things is his mentality - it's really good. He is a winner. I was impressed with the conversations I had with him. He wants to improve."

Johnson signed a new four-year deal at Portsmouth in January, but club officials accepted they could not stand in his way if he was offered the opportunity to move to a club playing in the Champions League.

"We were thinking about bringing in players with quality - that's the first thing," added Benitez.

Johnson's arrival could now signal the departure of Spanish right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m bid for the 26-year-old.

"Arbeloa was a good player for us last year," said Benitez.

"The thing is, he has one year left on his contract. We have offered him an extension and we're talking.

"He is our player but if there is a good offer we have to consider it. We have two or three clubs asking about him. He would like to stay but he knows the competition will be hard."

He added: "We could buy one more player without selling anyone. We now have to wait."

Italian left-back Andrea Dossena could also leave Anfield, while Reds midfielder Sebastien Leto is on the verge of a move to Greek side Panathinaikos.

The Argentine, who joined Liverpool from Lanus for around £2m in 2007, was on loan at Olympiacos last season, but he has grown impatient waiting for them to make their move.

"I think that the possibilities to play at Panathinaikos next season right now are more than 90%," said the winger.

Cesc Fabregas insists he is staying at Arsenal and has rejected claims he is line for a return to Spain.

Teenager Altidore will be grabbing a few headlines back in America

USA caused one of the biggest surprises in Confederations Cup history by beating European champions Spain to reach Sunday's final.

Jozy Altidore scored the opener when he turned his marker Joan Capdevila to fire in from 15 yards.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey doubled the lead in the second half when he converted Landon Donovan's pass from close range.

Tim Howard saved from Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas before USA's Michael Bradley saw red for a foul on Xavi.

Many would have predicted Spain to win this match with a lot to spare, judging by the ease with which they won their group games.

But Vicente del Bosque's men had only faced New Zealand, Iraq and South Africa in the lead up, and with all respect to those teams, the Americans were always going to be a tougher proposition.

Time and time again in the first half, the USA managed to read Spain's trademark killer passes by sticking tight to potent forwards David Villa and Fernando Torres.

In fact, prior to USA's goal, Spain's best opportunity fell to Liverpool hot-shot Torres whose attempt at a volley from six yards was superbly scuppered by Watford's Jay DeMerit.

What was starkly apparent on the Free State Stadium pitch, was the superior athleticism of the Americans.

On occasions during the opening 45 minutes, they had as many people in their attacking third as they did in their own box.

They went close on a couple of occasions before taking the shock lead, with Charlie Davies sending his bicycle-kick two yards wide before Dempsey missed by the same margin with a low 20 yard drive.

The goal came as a result of a one-two between Carlos Bocanegra and club team-mate Dempsey who found well-built forward Altidore.

The Villarreal striker turned Capdevila far too easily before smacking his drive, which Iker Casillas only managed to get a weak hand to en route, into the back of the net.

Embarrassment was not in Spain's script, so they upped their game and came close to equalising just before the break when Howard was forced to save low with his feet after Torres sold Bocanegra the sweetest of dummies from six yards.

The pressure on the USA defence increased tenfold after the interval with Everton number one Howard forced to make quality saves from Fabregas, twice from long range, and Ramos, who rifled in an angled drive at the near post.

Despite using up masses of energy in defence, the USA made the most of their one and only break forward in the second half.

Donovan found himself free on the right, surged to the edge of the area before playing in a square ball that Ramos, oblivious to who was behind him, could only touch on to Dempsey who fired in from six yards.

Spain surged forward but could not find a way past the solid American defence.

Bradley, who exemplified his side's tenacity, was sent off for a late challenge on Xavi, but by that point the USA had all but cemented their place in the final.

But perhaps most significant was that they prevented Spain from setting a new world record of 36 matches without defeat.

Santa Cruz has been a long-term target for City boss Mark Hughes

Manchester City have signed Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn on a four-year deal after the striker passed a medical.

The 27-year-old was under contract with Blackburn until 2012 but had a buy-out clause in his contract for £18m.

Santa Cruz will link up once more with manager Mark Hughes, who bought him from Bayern Munich when he was in charge at Blackburn two years ago.

The Paraguayan said: "It's been close to happening for a while. Now I can focus on doing my best for the club."

He scored 23 goals in his first season at Blackburn, but injury stalled his progress in the 2008-09 campaign.

Santa Cruz, who scored just six goals last season, signed a four-year contract extension at Ewood Park last summer.

But he became a target for City after their takeover by the Abu Dhabi United group, with a series of offers rejected in the January transfer window.

Santa Cruz told the club's website: "The owners want the club to be more successful. They want to break into the top four, and the fact that the fans are so passionate about everything to do with City was also a factor. I am very motivated to play for these fans.

"I know the kind of football Mark Hughes wants to play and the kind of character he is - he's a winner, he wants to make things happen and be successful.

"Those are always my thoughts as well, so knowing what he wants was a big factor in coming here, because I know the club is going in the right direction."

Hughes said that Santa Cruz would be a key addition to his squad. He added: "His ability in the air and his physical presence are qualities we've been missing, but he also has technical ability and good pace for a big man.

"He's a very good player and one I know well from our time at Blackburn."

The deal is City's second signing of the summer, following Gareth Barry's £12m move from Aston Villa.

After joining from Bundesliga side Bayern Munich for £3.8m in 2007, Santa Cruz went on to make 70 appearances for Rovers.

But he only played 16 times last season in a disjointed campaign, with a knee problem keeping him on the sidelines for the last two months.

Santa Cruz could make a swift return to Ewood Park, with City's first game of the new season at Blackburn.

American Lucas Glover survived late charges from Phil Mickelson and David Duval to clinch the rain-hit 109th US Open at Bethpage on Monday.

Glover claimed his maiden major by two shots from world number two Mickelson, former world number one Duval and third-round leader Ricky Barnes.

England's Ross Fisher was close for much of the final round but ended three back for his best major finish.

Tiger Woods threatened but ended four strokes behind Glover at level par.

The tournament was wide open for much of the final day as Barnes, who held a six-shot lead at one stage during the third round, and Glover came back to the pack after starting the day tied for the lead at seven under, five shots clear.

As Tour rookie Barnes fell away early on, Mickelson twice joined Glover in the lead, once with an eagle on the 13th and then again as his compatriot three-putted on 15, his only three-putt of the week.

But Mickelson slipped back with a bogey on 17 and Duval, who had amassed a triple-bogey six on the 3rd, fought back to join Glover out in front with a third straight birdie on 16.

Duval, ranked 882 in the world at the start of the week, also dropped a shot on 17 and Glover picked up a shot of his own to take a two-shot lead into the final two holes.

The 29-year-old, who won his solitary PGA Tour title in 2005, carded careful pars at 17 and 18 for a 73 and an unlikely victory.

"It was a test of patience," he said. "It was tough, we got the full value of the course. But the golf course played fantastic and it was just hard.

"The birdie at 16 was [also] huge. I heard some roars ahead and know it was important."

Glover, ranked 71 in the world before the event, was second at Charlotte last month for his best PGA showing of the year but had missed the cut in his three prior US Open appearances. His best finish in 11 previous majors was tied 20th at the 2007 Masters.

"I guess if I can win this one, I should be able to play all right every week," Glover said. "It will definitely be a big confidence boost."

Three-time major winner Mickelson, playing in his last event before wife Amy begins breast cancer treatment next month, carded a round of 70 to endure the heartbreak of a record fifth runner-up finish at the US Open and second at Bethpage after 2002.

"It was a lot of ups and downs for me, fighting to get back in it," said the 39-year-old left-hander, who was roared on by the adoring New York crowds.

"It was an emotional five days. I want to win this tournament badly. I feel I will have more chances."

Duval, the 2001 Open champion who has been in the golfing wilderness for much of the last eight years, collected his first top-10 finish in any tournament since 2002 with a closing 71.

"I'm pleased with how I played but disappointed at where I finished. I came here to win," Duval said. "It may be arrogance but it's where I feel like I belong."

Barnes, the 2002 US Amateur champion, set a new US Open 36-hole scoring record of 132 and reached 11 under during the third round, but he struggled with his game for much of the day in the final group with Glover and carded a 76.

Fisher, the world number 29, struck a superb eagle putt at the 13th hole to move three under and within one of the lead but bogeys on 15 and 17 took him to a round of 72 and killed his chances of becoming the first Briton to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.

"It's something I will never forget," said the 28-year-old, who learned his golf at Wentworth. "This is only my second US Open. But what an experience."

World number one Woods, who has never won a major when not at least sharing the 54-hole lead, failed in his bid to create more golf history.

He was aiming for a record-equalling fourth US Open crown and to become the first man to defend all four major titles by winning his 15th major.

Woods, who made the cut by one and was 14 strokes adrift at one stage during the second round, edged closer to the top as the leaders faltered, while back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 gave him hope.

But his late charge petered out with a bogey at the 15th and missed birdie putts on 16 and 17 as he carded 69 to finish tied sixth with Soren Hansen and Hunter Mahan.

"I gave myself so many chances and made nothing," said Woods.

Sweden's Henrik Stenson finished on one over, while Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory made a move with a 68 to end two over alongside Spain's Sergio Garcia.

The Monday finish, caused by torrential rain and waterlogging on Thursday and Saturday evening halting play, was the first time a US Open has overrun in regulation play since Larry Nelson won at Oakmont in 1983.

Rodwell was making his first start for the Under-21s

Jack Rodwell marked his first England Under-21 start with a first-half equaliser as his side finished top of Group B at the European Championships.

Germany had taken an early lead when Gonzalo Castro finished off Jerome Boateng's through ball from 12 yards.

A much-changed England side levelled on the half hour with Rodwell heading home Craig Gardner's inswinging corner.

Richard Stearman went close with a late volley as both sides qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Germany then survived a penalty claim when Stearman was brought down by Benedikt Howedes.

But England did equalise on the half hour, and it was no more than they deserved.

Gardner's inswinging corner from the left was headed home from close range by the unmarked Rodwell and England were level.

Rodwell had a further chance before the break, but blazed over from the edge of the area after a fine run through the heart of the Germany midfield.

England introduced keeper Joe Lewis after the break but he was rarely tested in a lacklustre start to the second half.

Barnes saw his lead disappear early in the final round at Bethpage

Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover will resume with a five-shot lead when the final round of the 109th US Open concludes at Bethpage on Monday.

The unheralded Americans are seven under and clear of Phil Mickelson, former world number one David Duval, England's Ross Fisher and Hunter Mahan.

Defending champion Tiger Woods picked up a late birdie to close to within seven as play was halted for the night.

Monday's final round will resume at 0900 local time (1400 BST).

The Monday finish, caused by torrential rain and waterlogging on Thursday and Saturday evening halting play, will be the first time a US Open has overrun since Larry Nelson won at Oakmont in 1983.

Should players be level at the end of 72 holes, an 18-hole play-off will begin immediately after, weather permitting.

The 28-year-old Barnes, who won the 2002 US Amateur, led Glover by one at halfway, but despite forging as much as six shots clear in Sunday's third round, he ended with a level-par 70 to remain one clear of his compatriot going straight into the fourth round.

But PGA Tour rookie Barnes, ranked 519 in the world, dropped a shot at the opening hole to rejoin Glover and left himself in the rough on the 2nd as the hooter went at 1958 (0058 BST) with some of golf's biggest names massing behind.

"If you don't have a little bit of nerves when you're in the heat of competition, and especially in the last group, you're not human," said Barnes.

The 29-year-old Glover, a PGA Tour winner in 2005, admitted the lead was fragile: "It's going to be pressure-packed. There are too many great players and the golf course is too good."

The popular world number two Mickelson, roared on by the vocal New York crowd who sympathise with the plight of his wife Amy who has breast cancer, leads the pack at two under after parring the first two holes of his final round.

The 39-year-old left-hander, who was second behind Woods at Bethpage in 2002, is a three-time major winner but is eyeing his first US Open title after four runner-up finishes.

Mickelson is a firm favourite with the New York crowds

"If I can get a hot round going I can make up the difference. I'm one good round away," Mickelson said after his third round.

Surrey's Fisher and America's 2001 Open champion Duval, who has dropped to 882 in the world, both dropped a shot at the 1st to join Mickelson and US Ryder Cup player Mahan in the tie for third with at least 15 holes remaining.

"I know I've been there before," said Duval, 37, who has spent most of the last eight years in the golfing wilderness. "It's not like a distant memory. I feel comfortable in what I'm doing and confident in what I'm doing and that's all you can ask for."

Canada's 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir is alone in seventh at one under after three, while Woods nudged into the group at level par with a birdie on the 7th shortly before play was suspended in the gloom of Sunday evening.

If he is to clinch a 15th major title, the world number one will have to equal both the US Open 36-hole comeback record of 11 strokes, set by Lou Graham in 1975, and the mark of seven shots that Arnold Palmer clawed back in the final round when he won at Cherry Hills in 1960.

Woods, who began with a bogey but cancelled it out immediately with a 12-footer for birdie, would also become the first man to successfully defend all four majors.

But he will have to achieve another unprecedented feat by winning a first major when not leading or sharing the lead after 54 holes.

"I'm going to have to shoot a low round and probably get some help," said Woods before the final round. "Obviously it's not totally in my control."

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell is also level par overall after four holes, while countryman Rory McIlroy has made up two shots and is two over after 10.

England's Oliver Wilson is two over after five, with Spain's Sergio Garcia slipping to three over after seven.

Wales fly-half James Hook had enjoyed an impressive Lions tour

James Hook will continue on the British and Irish Lions tour after being examined by a neurologist on Monday.

Hook sustained a head injury last week and if had been found to be concussed the fly-half would have been stood down automatically for three weeks.

The Wales and Ospreys player has been named on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Emerging Springboks.

"James has been cleared and the whole protocol was followed," said Lions head coach Ian McGeechan.

"We made a late call this morning [in terms of who got selected at fly-half on Tuesday]."

Wales team-mates Shane Williams, Andy Powell and Martyn Williams all start at Newlands, Cape Town, for the Lions.

All four players will hope to catch the selectors' eyes for Saturday's second Test against South Africa in Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria.

Hook was helped off in the Lions' bruising win against the Southern Kings after just 12 minutes following a nasty blow to the head and was replaced by Ronan O'Gara, who captains the Lions against the Emerging Springboks.

"We just felt with selection for this game... that Ronan needs some game time, logically it was the best way round to to do it. [O'Gara to start, Hook on the bench]," McGeechan added.

"But making sure we could have him [Hook] involved was the most important thing from my point of view."

Despite a stirring second-half fight-back in the first Test, the Lions lost 26-21 in the series opener in Durban.

Full-back Lee Byrne came off injured in that defeat just before half-time at Kings Park and the Lions will continue to monitor a suspected recurrence of a long-standing foot problem.

McGeechan says the prognosis on Byrne is encouraging: "The medics are having a good look at his foot. I think it is alright.

"He is recovering well and did part of the training this morning [Monday].

"They are reasonably confident that he will be fine [for Saturday's second Test] but we didn't want to push it for Tuesday's game."

Lions doctor James Robson confirmed: "It is probably a mild recurrence of a previous injury... inflammation or tearing of the structure that holds the arch of the foot.

"It is a very painful and often recurrent condition... it may have well been that he has pulled a few fibres."

Vettel romps to Silverstone win

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel scored a crushing victory in the British Grand Prix as championship leader Jenson Button's Brawn struggled to sixth.

Vettel took advantage of his team-mate Mark Webber being caught behind Brawn's Rubens Barrichello to build a decisive lead in the first stint of the race.

Webber passed Barrichello at the first pit stops to complete a Red Bull one-two ahead of the Brawn driver in third.

Last year's winner Lewis Hamilton was 16th in a car he said had "no grip".

Felipe Massa's Ferrari was fourth after winning a battle with the Williams of Nico Rosberg. Behind Button, Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took the final points positions in seventh and eighth.

The result leaves Button with a reduced but still substantial championship lead of 23 points over Barrichello, with Vettel two further points adrift and 3.5 ahead of Webber.

Button's advantage is still more than two clear victories but, with more than half the season still to go, he will be concerned by the startling pace shown by Red Bull, who introduced a major upgrade to their car and were in a league of their own throughout the weekend at Silverstone.

"It was a completely seamless race by both drivers and they completely dominated it," said Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.

"We can really mount a championship challenge from here."

Brawn's potential was reduced by the low temperatures in Northamptonshire - both Button and Barrichello struggled to get their tyres up to the temperature at which they give their optimum grip.

That put the season's dominant team back into the battle with Williams, Toyota and Ferrari behind the leaders - a position from which they did well to finish third and sixth.

Red Bull, by contrast, had looked strong favourites as soon as their updated RB5 car showed its pace in practice in Friday.

Vettel was on pole by more than half a second and he made the most of the fact that Webber, after a frustrating qualifying session, was stuck behind Barrichello on the grid and could not pass him in the opening laps.

The German rising star, 21, pulled away by about a second a lap over the first stint, and was nearly 20 seconds in front of Barrichello by the time the Brazilian became the first of the top three to stop on lap 19.

"It's never easy it's a long race - you have to stay focused and keep your eyes open all the time," said Vettel.

"The start was very important and in the first stint I tried to push as hard as I could and make a gap.

"That worked perfectly and I had a fantastic car. The tyres were fantastic as well. This was a step in the right direction."

Webber, who spent the first stint less than a second behind the Brawn, came in on the next lap, and made up enough time to exit the pits just ahead of Barrichello.

From that moment, a Red Bull one-two was locked on barring any unforeseen misfortune.

Barrichello found himself holding off the Williams of Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa's Ferrari - a battle he won by staying out for a couple of extra laps before his final stop and rejoining with a comfortable advantage.

Massa jumped Rosberg at their final stops and in the closing laps they found themselves coming under increasing pressure from Button.

Brawn had decided to save a set of the quicker softer tyres until the final stint, when both Massa and Rosberg were on the harder and slower of the two tyre compounds teams are obliged to use in the race.

That meant Button was much faster than the Ferrari and Williams in the final few laps. The home crowd cheered him on, but although the Englishman closed in on them he was unable to pass.

"I didn't know what was going happen today," he told BBC Sport.

Hamilton and Alonso do battle down the field

"I had good pace when I was on the soft tyres. The pace in the last stint compared to Rosberg and Massa was magnificent. [But] I had nowhere to go at the start. Everybody shot by on the outside. It is down to [our] tyre temperatures today."

World champion Hamilton - now 11th in the 2009 drivers' championship - started the race in 19th and, after a brief but engaging battle with Renault's two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso, finished 16th.

"I was pushing all the way and I the most important thing for me today was to give something to the fans," he said. "All I could do was try my best.

"This has been the best race in terms of the crowd for a long time in F1. I enjoyed it because of the fans and they gave me so much energy today, regardless of how bad we are doing."

Dwain Chambers claimed victory in the 200m to help Great Britain finish in third place at the European Team Championship in Portugal.

Chambers replaced the injured Rikki Fifton and completed the sprint double.

Andy Turner took the 110m hurdles while the men's 4x400m relay team won the final event to ensure they finished third behind Germany and Russia.

But Phillips Idowu was beaten into second in the triple jump by Olympic champion Nelson Evora of Portugal.

The victories for Chambers have made him keen to chase a double at the World Championships in Berlin in August.

"The 200m is not my specialist event and I didn't know what I could do against these guys," he said.

"I am very tired, the weather is very hot but I have to do this in order to become stronger and faster but this was about getting points for the team. I thought go for it and not to lose."

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee, acknowledged Chambers' contribution and added: "Given his status and the opposition it is not a surprise that he won but then I'm very happy he agreed to substitute at the last minute."

Turner went into his hurdles race as favourite and finished a comfortable winner in 13.42 seconds.

"It was okay, I expected to be a bit faster," said Turner, who finished well clear of Jackson Quinonez of France and Germany's Matthias Buhler.

"Conditions were fine and the track is fast, so I expected a bit more," added Turner, who although no longer receiving lottery funding is determined to continue his career and compete at the London Olympics.

"Anyway the time wasn't important, I just wanted the points."

Idowu was looking to get revenge on the man who beat him by five centimetres in Beijing and produced two strong opening jumps of 17.48m and 17.50m.

But Evora putting in what proved to be the winning leap of 17.59m in the third round and the 30-year-old Londoner was unable to respond.

Olympic 400m champion and British team captain Christine Ohuruogu stepped down to 200m and finished third behind Yuliya Gushchina of Russia and Poland's Marta Jeschke.

The British team captain, who was unwell since her arrival in Portugal said afterwards that she was just using the race as part of her preparations for the 400m at the World Championships.

Van Commenee said afterwards he was reasonably happy with the team's performance.

"Coming to the competition you want to win. But finishing third is acceptable," he said.

"Obviously we had some weak events - I knew that in advance. But there were some positives for me, so overall I would say it was an acceptable performance."

Afridi - the hero against South Africa, and again in the final

Pakistan won the ICC World Twenty20 in an exciting finish at a noisy Lord's when Sri Lanka's total of 138-6 was overhauled with eight balls remaining.

Shahid Afridi, man of the match in the semi-final, was again the hero, hitting 54 not out from 40 balls to steer Pakistan to an eight-wicket win.

Having chosen to bat, Sri Lanka lost star batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first over and were soon 2-2.

Kumar Sangakkara's 64 gave them hope but Pakistan paced their chase well.

Sri Lanka had progressed through the tournament smoothly, winning all their matches and relying on the brilliant batting of Dilshan and some superb bowling led by Ajantha Mendis.

But on the grand stage, both their leading players fluffed their lines, and Pakistan ruthlessly seized the initiative.

Pakistan had lost two of their first three matches and needed a win against the Netherlands just to make the last eight. But they turned a corner when thrashing New Zealand - from which point they never looked back.

They began the final in ideal fashion, with a wicket-maiden from 17-year-old sensation Mohammad Aamer.

It wasn't just any wicket-maiden - a rare event indeed in this format. The fact that the tournament's leading run-scorer Dilshan had been dismissed made Aamer's over extra special.

Dlishan craves deliveries on a good length so he can sweep and drive, but keeping the ball short and straight, Aamer bowled four dot-balls then enticed a top-edged pull to short fine-leg.

The wicket seemed to scare Sri Lanka's other batsmen, who had not enjoyed particularly good tournaments, and it was the fast-medium bowler Abdul Razzaq who reaped the rewards.

Jehan Mubarak, promoted up the order, skied a catch into the off-side, Sanath Jayasuriya crashed a six and two fours but then dragged one on, before Mahela Jayawardene edged an attempted late-cut to slip.

Sangakkara and Chamara Silva had a major repair operation on their hands, coming together with the score 32-4 in 5.3 overs. They put on 35 from 36 balls which at least stopped the rot, but the arrival of Umar Gul dented Sri Lanka's renaissance.

Silva mistimed a pull to midwicket and Isuru Udana swished and missed the last two balls of a fine over. It got even better for Pakistan when Afridi bowled Udana to leave the score 70-6 from 13 overs.

Finally, some positive running between the wickets from Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews saw nine runs come off a Saeed Ajmal over and then Gul, so brilliant in Pakistan's last three victories, suddenly lost his length and was hammered for 14 in an over.

Mathews played his part too, clubbing a couple of boundaries on the on-side before tucking into the final over, bowled by Aamer.

It was a great day for Pakistan fans

The decision to give the teenager the final over looked a questionable one, and with Mathews flaying a boundary through the slips and muscling a six through the on-side 17 more precious runs came Sri Lanka's way.

Pakistan's chase was given impetus by Kamran Akmal, who hit big leg-side sixes off both Mendis and Mathews to take his team to a very respectable 48-0 from seven overs.

Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka's sixth bowler, then immediately had Akmal stumped, but the other opener Shahzaib Hasan, who had been so quiet, drilled consecutive boundaries off Mendis, the mystery spinner who Pakistan were playing so well.

When he fell to Muttiah Muralitharan, the required rate hit eight an over, but Pakistan still had eight wickets in hand and just 64 more runs were required.

Afridi, who had had time to play himself in, now hit Muralitharan into the Tavern Stand and then launched him over wide mid-off for four.

That made Pakistan hot favourites, but just 16 runs came off the next three overs, so 26 were still wanted from 18 balls.

But Afridi, with Shoaib Malik playing a quiet role in support, now smashed Udana for six over midwicket and pulled him past fine-leg for four more, leaving an easy seven runs needed from the last two overs.

Brazil will meet South Africa in the semi-finals

A stunning spell of three goals in eight minutes from Brazil put paid to Italy's hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Luis Fabiano put Brazil in front in the 37th minute after finding the corner of the net from just inside the Italy box.

The Sevilla striker put Brazil further ahead when dinking over the onrushing Gianluigi Buffon from close range.

And Andrea Dossena's own-goal just before the break consigned them to defeat and saw the USA qualify instead.

With Egypt losing 3-0 to the USA a 3-1 defeat for the World Cup winners would have been enough to go through, but despite a second half rally they never looked like beating Brazil keeper Julio Cesar.

Brazil dominated the opening exchanges, playing more like the team in need of a positive result to advance.

They had all but qualified for the semi-final, where they will play hosts South Africa, ahead of Sunday's game.

Ramires had the first chance for Brazil, but fired against the outside of the post from a tight angle having been played in by the lively Fabiano.

Brazil forward Robinho then tested keeper Buffon with a low drive from 20-yards while at the other end Mauro Camoranesi struck a half-volley just over the bar.

But it was as close as Italy came with Brazil looking increasingly dangerous the longer the half went on.

Daniele De Rossi deflected Lucio's shot o nto his own post and behind and from the resulting corner Brazil's captain forced a fine close-range save from Buffon.

A minute later Brazil were in front with Fabiano finding the corner of the net from 12-yards out having been played onside by Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

Cannavaro was winning his 126th cap for his country, equalling the record of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, but it was an otherwise forgettable night for the central defender.

Brazil doubled their lead when Fabiano dinked over the onrushing Buffon from close range and just before the break Dossena turned Robinho's low cross from the left into his own net for 3-0.

With Italy needing to get back into the game they started the second half brightly.

The lively Giuseppe Rossi soon forced a fine save from Cesar from 20-yards out. Moments later Alberto Gilardino went close for Italy flicking a near post cross towards goal with Cesar again reacting well to avert the danger.

Rossi then went close with a fierce long range drive that Cesar did well to beat out while at the other end Kaka curled the ball inches wide from the edge of the box as the game became increasingly stretched.

Kaka was just wide with a shot from the edge of the box and as news filtered through of the score in the Egypt-USA game, Italy knew time was running out for them.

De Rossi had Italy's last chance, but the striker blazed wide from the edge of the box to consign them to an early exit from the competition.

The USA produced a barnstorming display to thump Egypt and surprisingly reach the Confederations Cup semi-finals.

With Brazil 3-0 winners against Italy in the other Group B game, the USA, who had lost their opening two games, went through at Egypt and Italy's expense.

Egypt goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari's spilled Jozy Altidore's cross and Charlie Davies pounced for the opener.

After the break the USA upped the tempo and after Michael Bradley sidefooted in Clint Dempsey headed home the third.

Dempsey's goal ensured the USA qualified under the most unlikely circumstances and will now play European champions Spain in the first semi-final in Bloemfontein on Wednesday with South Africa up against Brazil in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Egypt were missing striker Mohamed Zidan with a hamstring injury and his replacement Ahmed Abdel-Ghani was guilty of missing several first half chances in the early exchanges.

But the USA also had several attacks before finally going ahead, with Egypt up to that point thankful to Al Hadari for keeping them in the game.

But Al Hadari was at fault for the opener when after failing to take Altidore's cross from the right, he was then involved in a mix up between Ahmed Fathi and Hani Said before Davies diverted the ball in off the keeper for 1-0.

Soon after Landon Donovan embarked on a weaving run, finding himself one on one with the Egyptian keeper and only Al Hadari's bravery prevented him from making it 2-0.

Chances came and went at both ends into the second half and the US were denied a penalty when Said blocked Altidore's shot on the line with a combination of his thigh and arm.

With Italy 3-0 down in the other game, Egypt knew that if the scores remained the same they would still qualify, but that left them in two minds as to whether they should defend or attack.

And the US took advantage of their indecisiveness with two goals in the final 30 minutes.

Bradley's low shot found the back of the net for 2-0 and with 20 minutes remaining the diving figure of Dempsey superbly held off the challenge of Wael Gomaa to head home the vital third.

Late pressure followed but US keeper Brad Guzan kept Egypt out to set up a semi-final meeting with Spain.

Wladimir Klitschko had been due to fight David Haye on Saturday

Wladimir Klitschko defended his WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles stopping the previously unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev with a 10th-round technical knockout.

Klitschko, who had been due to meet Britain's David Haye on Saturday, dominated throughout and had his opponent down in the second round.

The Ukrainian then cut Chagaev above the left eye in the sixth.

And after three more rounds of punishment, Chagaev's corner pulled their man from the fight.

It was a classy performance from 33-year-old Klitschko with the fight being held in front of 61,000 fans at Schalke O4 FC's Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, the biggest boxing audience in Germany in 70 years.

Chagaev, who had his fight with joint WBA champion Nikolay Valuev called off last month because of health worries, was drafted in as a late replacement for Haye, but was outclassed throughout.

Haye withdrew earlier this month after sustaining a back injury in training.

And Klitschko hinted after the fight that the pair could still meet, although the 28-year-old former cruiserweight king would have to wait his turn.

"I was really upset that David Haye wasn't able to fight because I wanted to punish him badly," said Klitschko.

"Personally I'm very upset about David Haye. Because of him I didn't fight in March or April when he promised to deliver Stamford Bridge as a venue. But he didn't deliver.

"He then asked me to postpone this fight for two weeks because of his bad back and then changed it to four weeks. I cannot take this guy seriously.

"Now he has to get in line and earn his chance to fight for the world title. He has to do that with his hands and not his mouth.

"We'll get it on either way and I will knock him out in the 12th as I've said before."

The towering Ukrainian dominated from the first bell, rocking Chagaev with a powerful straight right.

Another straight right floored Chagaev in the second, but the Uzbekistan-born fighter cleared his head to make it through the round.

Klitschko used his superior reach to his advantage, using the left jab, straight right hook combination, to break through Chagaev's flimsy defence.

He rocked Chagaev in the fifth with another left-right combination and after Klitschko cut his opponent in the sixth, the fight was all but over.

To his credit Chagaev held on until the ninth, but after taking another beating his corner pulled him from the fight at the end of round.

It was Chagaev's first defeat in 27 fights, while Klitschko moves onto a record of 56 wins with 47 knockouts and just three defeats.

Klitschko now intends to meet joint WBA champion Nikolai Valuev, before a potential showdown with Haye.

"For me Chagaev is the best fighter in this weight division behind my brother (WBC champion Vitali) and I," said Klitschko.

"This is the first time he has lost and he is a very good fighter.

"Every punch in this fight was important. Now I want to fight for the WBA belt and I promise you I will be back here again."

Iraq started brightly with Emad Mohammed's downwards header bouncing up and over the bar while Younis Mahmoud should have done better when finding himself one-on-one with Moss.

Mahmoud fired straight at the legs of Moss as chances continued to come and go.

At the other end, Killen's strength was causing Iraq problems and the New Zealand striker blazed over from inside the box when finding himself free.

Defender Ben Sigmund had a similarly decent chance but headed wide from close range.

Killen later forced a fine save off Mohammed Kassid in the Iraq goal as New Zealand ended the half brightly.

The second half saw Iraq dominate possession, without creating a clear-cut chance with the final pass so often letting them down.

But as news filtered through of the score in the Spain-South Africa match, Iraq threw caution to the wind.

That left them vulnerable on the break and Killen was just wide with a neat turn and shot.

The game burst into life in the final minutes with Moss saving brilliantly at the feet of Jassim.

At the other end Shane Smeltz missed with a late volley while Sadir's 20-yard strike was turned around the post by Moss.

As the game entered its final stages Lochhead also cleared off the line from Salam Shaker as New Zealand held on for the draw.

Mokoena's late challenge on Fabregas gave away a penalty, but Khune produced a superb save to beat away Villa's powerful shot and then got up quickly to smother Carlos Puyol's effort from the rebound.

But within a minute Villa had atoned for his penalty miss, controlling a floated pass and volleying past Khune, although South Africa defenders appealed, claiming the Valencia forward had used his arm to cushion the ball.

Tevez will not be playing at Old Trafford in a United shirt again

Manchester United have confirmed that Carlos Tevez is leaving the club.

United were willing to pay the £25.5m to turn the striker's two-year loan move into a permanent five-year deal but Tevez, 25, has decided to move on.

"Disappointingly, his advisors informed the club that he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United," read a United statement.

"The club thanks Carlos for his services over the last two seasons and wishes him good luck for the future."

Tevez became a crowd favourite during his time at the Old Trafford club and helped the side win the last two Premier League titles, the 2008 Champions League trophy as well as last season's Carling Cup.

But he has joined Cristiano Ronaldo in wanting to exit the club, with his final appearance being as a substitute in United's loss to Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final.

United said they were willing to make Tevez "one of its highest paid players" but were told by the Argentine international's advisors, who own the player's economic rights, that he would not be accepting the offer.

The forward's advsier, Kia Joorabchian, said: "During the last two years he wasn't really offered a contract. He had never been offered a permanent stay there and over the last 10 days Manchester United did make an offer to him.

"I just want to make it very clear that Carlos has never asked for any money. He has never asked for an increase in his salary and we never asked for a greater sum of money.

"Its purely that they needed an answer in a very short amount of time and Carlos needed a bit more time to think about it so the decision was made that everyone walks their own way."

Manchester City and Chelsea now appear to be the two main clubs vying for Tevez, who - according to Joorabchian - is unlikely to move to Liverpool because of their intense rivalry with United.

City are flexing their financial clout as their manager Mark Hughes tries to put together a squad capable of challenging the top four of United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

"We've held discussions with some of the interested parties over the last week and the fact is that Carlos will not make any decision until the first week of July," Joorabchian told BBC Five Live.

"This is a very important decision for him. He is deciding on the future of the next five years.

"This is purely and simply his personal decision. It will not be anyone else's decision. It will not be mine or other parties involved.

"He has to sign the next five years with a club he believes has got ambition to go forward in the Premier league, a club with history and one that really wants to achieve things.

"Carlos does not want to go to Liverpool because of their competitive nature with Manchester United. He does love the United fans very much and has a lot of respect for them.

"I think that if you look at Carlos's history, he has always gone into grassroots clubs like Boca Juniors and Corinthians, who had not won anything and were at the bottom of the league when he joined them and he won the title with them in his first season."

Tevez scored 15 goals last season but was frustrated at continually finding himself on the bench for key games and was wary of the issue ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Despite the affection of United's fans, he has reportedly complained of a lack of respect from the club and his treatment at their hands.

Joorabchian recently explained that United's failure to sign his client up permanently last summer and in January 2009 were behind Tevez's complaints.

And he added: "If Carlos had been offered a contract six months ago at United he wouldn't have hesitated [to sign it]," he said.

His departure now leaves United manager Sir Alex Ferguson without two of his most influential players of recent seasons.

Wigan midfielder Antonio Valencia has been linked with a move to United as the club try to replace the duo.

Substitute Adam Ashley-Cooper scored a try in each half as Australia secured a 2-0 whitewash over Italy in Melbourne.

Both sides rested key players but after Italy took an early lead with a penalty goal, Tatafu Polota-Nau scored the first try for Australia on 11 minutes.

The home side crossed the line again through Ryan Cross, while Ashley-Cooper went over a minute before half-time.

Italy kept the Australians scoreless for 30 minutes before Lachlan Turner and Ashley-Cooper ran in tries.

Having made numerous changes to the side beaten 31-8 in Canberra last week, Italy went ahead through the boot of Australia-born full-back Luke McLean, while fellow Aussie and former NRL star Craig Gower was effective and creative in his second start at fly-half.

But Australia's Quade Cooper created a four-on-one advantage in the right corner and Polota-Nau fell over the line for his first Test try.

Ashley-Cooper initially entered the fray when Peter Hynes was blood-binned, before replacing James O'Connor at full-back.

Cross took an inside pass to cruise over the tryline unscathed at the 26th minute before Ashley-Cooper leaped between two defenders to score.

Ashley-Cooper's second try came after he combined with Josh Valentine and sprinted clear from the 22-metre line.

Australia coach Robbie Deans said: "It was a good effort by a group who don't have a lot of background together.

"Once again, the Italians were successful in stymying our game for the greater part, but there were occasions where the boys worked hard and we scored five tries and that's not an easy thing to achieve against a side with the physical presence of these blokes."

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has declared his interest in fighting Britain's David Haye.

Haye has already seen one bout with Vitali, 37, fall through and was due to face the Ukrainian's brother, IBF and WBO champion Wladimir, on 20 June.

An injury to Haye saw that fight scrapped, but Vitali remains an option.

"Let's talk in the ring with the fists," Vitali told BBC World Service. "He is injured, he has a big mouth but this fight will be very interesting."

Haye's manager revealed recently his boxer wanted to fight Vitali and September looks a possible date.

Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight king, picked up a back injury while training to meet Wladimir and returned to the UK to have intensive physiotherapy.

The 28-year-old Briton insisted at the time he would be ready to fight on 11 July, three weeks after the original date, but the Ukranian's camp were unwilling to wait.

Wladimir will instead meet the joint WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev in Germany, while Haye has been left to pursue other options.

Manager Adam Booth said two weeks ago that Haye was keen on a clash in September, adding that if "Vitali wants to fight he would be up for it".

Despite Haye recently bad-mouthing both Klitschko brothers, Vitali said he was very interested in the fight.

"I want to see him in the ring," he added. "I don't fight for myself - not for me - I fight for boxing.

"We are discussing the details right now about the time and I think in September it can happen."

Vitali has only lost two fights, first when he was forced to retire with a shoulder injury against Chris Byrd in 2000 and the second when he was stopped on cuts by Lennox Lewis in 2003.

He was ringside to watch Haye's five-round demolition of Monte Barrett in London last November and a fight was set only for Vitali to pull out in order to make a mandatory defence of his WBC belt.

Haye is hoping to become Britain's first heavyweight world champion since Lewis retired in 2003.

Glover carded five birdies in 13 holes of his second round at Bethpage

American Lucas Glover surged into a one-shot lead over countryman Ricky Barnes at the end of day two of the US Open at Bethpage.

Glover was six under overall after 13 holes of his second round when play was halted at 2024 local time (0124 BST) following Thursday's rain delay.

Barnes reached five under after nine, with Sweden's Peter Hanson and first-round leader Mike Weir at four under.

Tiger Woods will start his second round on Saturday 10 shots adrift.

The 14-time major champion completed a first-round 74 on Friday morning after only three hours' play was possible because of heavy rain and waterlogging on Thursday.

"I was right there where I needed to be, and two bad shots and a mud ball later, here we go and I'm at four over par," Woods said.

No one has ever come back from so far behind after the first round to win the US Open - Jack Fleck's nine-stroke deficit in the 1955 tournament is the record.

Sebastian Vettel secured pole for the British Grand Prix in his updated Red Bull car as Brawn's championship leader Jenson Button struggled to land sixth.

Vettel edged Button's team-mate Rubens Barrichello into second and his own team-mate Mark Webber into third with a time of one minute 19.509 seconds.

Toyota's Jarno Trulli will start Sunday's Silverstone race in fourth ahead of Williams's Kazuki Nakajimi.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is 19th, the worst qualifying result of his career.

Button suffered the worst qualifying result of his season, complaining later about low grip through the last complex - "I felt like I was skating around" - and he starts on the third row with Williams driver Nico Rosberg in seventh and Toyota's Timo Glock in eighth.

Vettel, Barrichello and Webber traded fastest laps in the high-pressure final qualifying session, but the German driver eventually came through quickest - although a disappointed Webber later claimed that he was held up by Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on one of his last hot laps.

"Kimi - I don't know what he was doing, drinking some vodka or dreaming or something," said Webber.

"He should have been on the inside and he was on the racing line.

"He could not have done a better job to distract me. These laps have to be perfect and that broke my rhythm. But, hey, I'm not 10th, I'm third. There's a huge amount of positives."

Only three pole-sitters in the last 14 British GPs at Silverstone have gone on to win, meaning it does not prove as critically decisive as some other circuits on the calendar.

But Vettel - with one GP win to his name this season - will be heartened by his third pole of the season as his bids to rein in runaway leader Button, who has won the other six races of 2009.

And, after conceding a lead on the first lap in Turkey to eventual winner Button after starting in pole position, the 21-year-old is determined not to make the same mistake at Silverstone, to where more than 200,000 race fans are expected to flock his weekend.

"It was the lap of the weekend," said Vettel. "It was close to perfect.

"As a driver you always think there is a little bit here or there, but it went very well.

"I was surprised how quick I was at that stage. I can only say big compliments back to the guys in the garage. We are proving the car is working very well."

In securing a front row spot on the grid, Brazilian driver Barrichello out-qualified Button for only the second time this season.

"I'm very pleased with this," he said. "For me too, the lap in Q3 was the best of the weekend. We've found a good balance on a circuit that has always been quite good for me.

"I'm in the middle of them [the Red Bulls] and it's going to be hard to beat them, but that's what I'm here for."

For world champion Hamilton, winner of last year's British GP by more than a minute, starting 19th on the grid marks a continuation of his nightmare season in a McLaren car glaringly lacking in downforce.

"I did the best I could and was pushing as hard as I could with the car," the 24-year-old told BBC Sport.

"[But] we were dead slow."

World champion Hamilton admits he will not now retain his title

The English driver was on a hot lap late on in the first qualifying session when the red flag came out to signal the introduction of a safety car after Force India's Adrian Sutil had careered into the barriers at high speed as he skidded off the track at Abbey because of brake problems.

But Hamilton insisted that did not impede his chances of getting through to the top 15, and admitted that his race weekend was effectively over.

"I gave it my all but I could not get much more out of it," he said.

"We'll keep pushing and fighting and hopefully put on a good show for the fans."

Sutil's crash, at around 170mph, will be a disappointment for Force India who had high hopes of securing their first points in F1 after a series of updates coming into the eighth race of the season.

The German driver walked away unhurt, and was then passed fit to race on Sunday after a precautionary medical check.

Starting in fifth represents a career-highest qualifying result for Japanese driver Nakajima and both Williams drivers are among the top 10 off the grid for the second time this season.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was 11th after being squeezed out of qualifying session two, along with Hamilton's team-mate Heikki Kovalainen.

Full-back Lee Byrne has given Lions head coach Ian McGeechan a fresh injury worry after limping off in their first Test with South Africa in Durban.

The Wales star suffered a suspected recurrence of foot damage and was taken off in the 37th minute at Kings Park to be replaced by Ireland's Rob Kearney.

The Ospreys back, who went off when the Lions trailed 19-7, has a history of ankle and foot problems.

Byrne is the latest in a long line of injury problems for the Lions.

The tourists have already lost Scotland prop Euan Murray to an ankle injury in the first-Test build-up.

The Lions have also lost Ryan Jones after the Wales captain was diagnosed with concussion on arrival in South Africa to replace Irishman Stephen Ferris.

South Africa had just enough power to survive the Lions' fightback

The British and Irish Lions gave themselves a mountain to climb in their three-match series with South Africa after the world champions survived a stirring second-half comeback to win a nail-biting opening Test in Durban.

An early try from captain John Smit and four penalties - three from Ruan Pienaar, the other from Frans Steyn - saw the Springboks take a commanding 19-7 half-time lead.

Tom Croft had gone over for the Lions, who lost Lee Byrne to injury, and the hosts were cruising when flanker Heinrich Brussow crossed early on the resumption.

But from 26-7 down, the Lions rallied and a second try from Croft with 12 minutes left galvanised the tourists.

Scrum-half Mike Phillips slashed over with five minutes remaining, Stephen Jones converting both to set up a grandstand finish.

But although the Lions continued to press in the frantic closing moments, the rattled Boks hung on to claim victory.

With the second and third Tests to come at altitude in Pretoria and Johannesburg over the next two Saturdays, the prospect of a second successive whitewash, after the 3-0 outcome in New Zealand, four years ago, is a distinct possibility.

But the Lions will reflect that they looked far more dangerous with ball in hand, should probably have scored another three tries, and their first-half pain was largely self-inflicted.

Their previously dominant scrummage on this tour conceded a welter of penalties, with Springboks prop Tendai "The Beast" Mtawarira mauling Phil Vickery, who departed five minutes into the second half.

Paul O'Connell's men got off to the worst possible start. Jones missed a difficult penalty from the left touchline in the second minute and then they lost their first line-out.

Signs of nerves were everywhere. A booming kick to the right corner saw Ugo Monye dally with JP Pietersen in hot pursuit, but Byrne salvaged the situation.

The reprieve was brief. A wave of South Africa attacks from the ensuing scrum ended with captain Smit powering through Croft's tackle for the opening try with less than five minutes on the clock, Pienaar adding the extras.

The Lions were given an immediate chance to hit back when Steyn dropped the kick-off, giving them an attacking scrum in a promising position.

After two re-sets, Phillips feigned right before number eight Jamie Heaslip went left, and Jones and Brian O'Driscoll combined to send Monye into the left corner.

The winger landed short but his momentum appeared to carry him over, but after several minutes of deliberation, the television match official Christophe Berdos ruled he had not grounded the ball after a brilliant covering tackle from Jean de Villiers.

The Lions, so strong in the scrum on tour to date, then conceded the first of a series of penalties at the set-piece, Pienaar drilling it over to make it 10-0 in as many minutes.

When they did get quality possession, the tourists looked dangerous. David Wallace burst onto Lee Mears' pop pass in midfield, but ran out of support as a try looked on.

Instead the Boks broke away and had an overlap down the left, only for loose-head prop Gethin Jenkins to cut down Bryan Habana in full flight and win a penalty as the wing was pinged for holding on.

Unfortunately for the Lions, Jones pushed the kick to the left of the uprights, and they proceeded to lose another line-out and another scrum, as Springboks prop Mtawarira caused Vickery all sorts of problems.

When Croft was penalised for not using his arms attempting to tackle Fourie Du Preez on the right touchline, Steyn smacked over the kick from 45m to make it 13-0.

But the Lions gained a foothold in the match when the hosts fumbled a line-out and Jamie Roberts barged straight through Adi Jacobs and Pietersen.

The Wales centre fed the supporting O'Driscoll, who cut back against the grain before releasing Croft to stretch over, Jones converting.

Suddenly the Springboks were making errors, Pienaar fumbling Monye's kick, and the Lions had a second try ruled out for crossing when Jones and O'Driscoll combined sweetly to send Tommy Bowe over.

The penalties continued to flow from the Lions though - O'Connell at a ruck, Vickery from another scrum.

Steyn pulled the first one wide, but Pienaar made no mistake with the next and when Bowe was then penalised for holding on under severe Springbok pressure, Pienaar was on the mark again to make it 19-7.

It could have been worse as the Lions conceded another penalty at scrum-time as the half-time whistle loomed, but this time Pienaar was off target from the right touchline.

Vickery, O'Connell and Mears were in conversation with referee Bryce Lawrence as the teams trooped off to the changing rooms, no doubt trying to clarify the reasons for the flow of penalties at scrum-time.

But Vickery reappeared after the interval, only to be hauled off five minutes later as Adam Jones was sent on in his place.

If the Lions were going to hit back, they had to do it quickly, but instead the dominant Boks scored their second try in the 46th minute.

First they drove a maul 40m from inside their own half, and when the Lions coughed up another penalty, they kicked to touch.

Once Victor Matfield had won the line-out, there was a sense of inevitability about the outcome, flanker Brussow emerging from the maul with the ball.

Pienaar's conversion left the Lions starting down the barrel at 26-7 down with more than half an hour left.

They might have gained some much-needed relief when Phillips stretched over after a promising series of attacks, but the scrum-half lost the ball in the act of touching down.

A Lions penalty in front of the posts was then reversed after replacement hooker Matthew Rees, on for Mears, was caught aiming a punch at Habana.

The Springboks proved adept at slowing up ball, and the Lions were reduced to trying cross-kicks to breach the defence, O'Driscoll's knocked on by Bowe.

The Boks kept conceding penalties, the Lions kept kicking to touch or running them, and eventually O'Driscoll put Croft over for his second try with 12 minutes left.

Jones's conversion reduced the deficit to 12 points, and the Lions should have scored again when swift hands put Monye clear, but replacement Morne Steyn forced the ball out of the wing's hands in the act of touching down.

Incredibly though, amid high drama, Phillips arrowed through a gap to score with five minutes left, Jones converting to make it 26-21.

The Lions had their chances in the closing minutes, but replacement Jaque Fourie gathered Bowe's pass in full flow, and a spirited comeback stalled agonisingly short.

Charlton says there is no ill-feeling at United over Ronaldo's departure

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton feels the fee for Cristiano Ronaldo's proposed £80m move from Old Trafford to Real Madrid is "vulgar".

Charlton, who scored 249 goals in 758 appearances for United, and is also a director on the club's board, admits the world-record offer shocked him.

"It's a lot of money, it's crazy really," said Charlton.

"If you want to be in the race, you have to pay the price, it seems sometimes a little bit vulgar."

Real have been courting Ronaldo for several seasons and, after several attempts to prize him away from Old Trafford, they are on the verge of finally getting their man.

The two clubs have agreed a deal to take Ronaldo to the Bernabeu, and the European player of the year now just needs to pass a medical and agree personal terms with the Spanish giants.

Charlton admits he is unsure whether it was the right decision to sell the 24-year-old but sees it as a deal that had to be done for the sake of both parties.

"That is business, I'm afraid," Charlton explained.

"We have responsibilities to our company and to all the fans that support Manchester United, and it was decided that Ronaldo could go.

"But it's a little bit soul-searching, you never know if you've made the right decision until the start of the season.

"It's an enormous amount and we will make sure we use it properly and our club will be better for it."

Charlton, 71, who like Ronaldo won the European Cup with United, says that despite the protracted nature of the transfer, there is no animosity at the club towards the Portuguese winger.

"Ronaldo is a great player. He's been with us for five or six years and in that time he has improved beyond all recognition," added Charlton.

"I suppose, in time, he will reflect and say that the best time he ever had in football was when he was at Manchester United. It was better for him and it was fantastic for the club.

"But we have no divine rights, we talked him out of it for one year but he's gone and we move on.

"Ronaldo leaves us because as a young boy he always dreamt about playing for Real Madrid, so if he leaves us, it's with our blessing."

Former England coach Peter Moores believes all-rounder Andrew Flintoff should be picked to play in the Ashes, despite his struggles with injury.

The 31-year-old has just returned from knee surgery and made only 12 runs for Lancashire on day one of their County Championship clash with Hampshire.

He also also failed to take a wicket on Thursday but Moores insisted Flintoff " would make my England team, yes".

"England are going to need experienced men like Freddie around," he added.

"What Freddie offers you with bat and ball and also as an outstanding slip fielder and as a senior man of that team is a great thing for any side to have, especially going into an Ashes series against Australia."

Flintoff was forced out of the Indian Premier League with a meniscus tear in his right knee and also missed the series against the West Indies and the ICC World Twenty20.

But Moores feels Flintoff is now making good progress on his comeback and has urged the 2005 Ashes star to remain patient.

It is sound advice for Flintoff, who has been dogged by injury since England's triumph over Australia four years ago.

He made a shock return against Durham on 11 June taking six wickets in total, although he made only three runs with the bat.

"It's about progression for Freddie," said Moores.

"He's been out the game for a couple of months with injury but on the positive side he's come through one game and he looks strong physically in this one.

"He's bowled, I think, better then he did against Durham and batting-wise he's looking good.

"It's also about patience. He has to go out there and stay positive and if he does that he'll get some runs. He is pleased he is playing and he wants to score.

"With the Ashes coming up everyone wants to go into that series feeling good about themselves.

"You can have nets but what you want is to have scored runs and to have taken wickets."

Shahid Afridi put in a stirring all-round performance as Pakistan toppled tournament favourites South Africa in the first World Twenty20 semi-final.

Afridi blitzed 51 off 34 balls and then removed batsmen Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers in his first two overs to pick up terrific figures of 2-16.

And although Pakistan's 149-4 did not look enough, South Africa eventually finished seven runs adrift on 142-5.

Jacques Kallis hit a valiant 64 off 54 balls but there was scant support.

After the agonies of their failed World Cup campaigns in the 50-over format in 1999, 2003 and 2007, South Africa had again failed to do justice to their talents when it really mattered.

They had gone into the Trent Bridge showdown unbeaten in the tournament, while Pakistan had played dreadfully in their opener - losing by 48 runs to England - and had also been comfortably beaten by Sri Lanka.

There were times when South Africa had the upper hand, particularly towards the end of Pakistan's innings and in the early stages of their chase. But Afridi's spell changed everything - and Umar Gul's yorkers at the business end of the contest closed the deal.

Pakistan's batsmen blazed away freely early on and after the second ball of the third over had advanced to a dangerous 28-1.

Kallis batted beautifully but the support was not there

But Kamran Akmal perished after an explosive 23, top-edging Dale Steyn to mid-on, and Shoaib Malik was a slow starter. So despite Afridi's three boundaries, a six-over start of 47-2 was not as good as it might have been.

Four overs later, with the half the overs in the innings used up, tenacious South African fielding - and accurate bowling - had limited the score to 68-2.

But Afridi now tucked into the off-spinner Johan Botha, hitting four off-side boundaries in succession. The first three were hit inside out through the covers, with the last delicately steered past the short third-man.

It was Graeme Smith's third spinner, and seventh bowler in all, who delivered a vital breakthrough, when Afridi attempted to mow Jean-Paul Duminy's first ball, and top-edged meekly to midwicket.

But Duminy's second over went for two fours, Malik depositing him over extra cover and Younus Khan, new to the crease, unfurling a delectable reverse-sweep.

Smith persisted with his first-choice spinner of three, Roelof van der Merwe, and the slow left-armer had Malik caught at long-off.

Pakistan now needed one or two really big overs at the death to take themselves up to a big score, but Younus and Abdul Razzaq had to be content with singles and the occasional two.

Bowling yorkers, and the occasional bouncer, Steyn and the 19-year-old Wayne Parnell produced exhibition stuff over the last four overs. None of the last 32 balls yielded a four or a six and the last five overs went for just 29.

Pakistan looked a little bit flat in the field when South Africa began their chase. Kallis was moving through the gears smoothly and Gul then failed to lay a hand on a skier offered by Smith, thumping the back of his head on the ground for good measure.

Such an error may have proved critical, but Smith top-edged another pull, and the 17-year-old left-armer Mohammad Aamer took the catch comfortably off his own bowling.

The next act of an intriguing drama came when Pakistan's spinners took to the field, and they were admirably led by Afridi.

Gibbs failed to read a top-spinner and was clean bowled, before De Villiers, South Africa's top batsmen in the tournament, chopped an attempted cut onto his stumps.

Kallis could no longer play within his comfort zone, with the required rate soaring and Duminy unable to get out of the blocks quickly.

South Africa needed 77 from the last seven overs, and got 10 off Gul's first when Pakistan's specialist death bowler did not quite hit his lines initially.

Perplexingly, Younus then opted for a seventh bowler in young Fawad Alam, but the slow left-armer was bullied for a Kallis four - and then a six - and suddenly South Africa were back in the hunt.

But Gul stormed back, with reverse-swing and yorkers aplenty, to give up just six runs in his second over, and that left 39 needed off the last three overs.

Only sixes would do now, but Kallis skied Saeed Ajmal to long-on, and the game was all but up. Gul kept Duminy and Albie Morkel to singles in the penultimate over, leaving Aamer the luxury of bowling the last with 23 wanted.

Sri Lanka are favoured to win their semi-final against West Indies at The Oval on Friday, but on the basis of this upset few will write off Chris Gayle's men.

The late Bob Woolmer is a hugely respected man in the Pakistan camp

Pakistan skipper Younus Khan says his team want to win the World Twenty20 as a tribute to former coach Bob Woolmer.

Pakistan play South Africa in the semi-finals on Thursday and Woolmer, who died during the 2007 World Cup, is still a strong influence on the squad.

"He was an inspiring person," Younus said of the Englishman. "He was like a father figure for me and the team.

"We all still miss him and if we win the World Cup I will dedicate that final game to him."

Woolmer spent more than two-and-a-half years in charge of Pakistan, with many of the current players regulars during that period.

However, after his team's loss to Ireland in the World Cup two years ago, he died aged 58 after being found unconscious in a hotel in the Caribbean.

But Younus has utilised Woolmer's strategy advice to fine effect in this current tournament, having moved Kamran Akmal and Shahid Afridi up the batting order to improve their run-rate.

"I learned a lot of things from Bob and he was always flexible, especially in the batting order," Younus added.

"I thought we needed a couple of in-form batsmen for big games like the semi-final and final."

Pakistan struggled at the crease during the early stages of the World Twenty20 and their 48-run demolition by England threatened an early trip home.

Despite a comfortable win over Ireland on Monday at The Oval, they were wobbling on 159-5, but Younus admitted that "everybody knows we're slow starters".

"We take some time and we need some time for ourselves and now we are just two wins away from winning the World Cup," he added.

"I still believe we were 20 runs short. It would be good if we could put 180 or 200 on the board because in the semi-finals there will be good teams against us and it's not possible to win all the time scoring 150."

Meanwhile, Younus said any suggestion that his team were ball-tampering was "embarrassing".

The Pakistan captain was reacting after New Zealand spoke to match officials last Saturday regarding the state of the ball, following Umar Gul's haul of 5-6 guiding them to victory in their Super Eights clash.

Gul is the leading wicket-taker in 20-over internationals' short history with 36 and also finished as the most prolific bowler in the previous world tournament with 13 wickets in South Africa.

"He knows the art, especially in Twenty20," said Younus. "He has worked hard in the nets. He has spoken to Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan and Shoaib Akhtar.

"It's all about hard work in the nets and that's why he's improving from day to day."

South Africa captain Graeme Smith admitted that combating Gul was going to be a major challenge for his side.

"Umar's obviously bowled really well," he said.

"Their tactics are pretty up front, in the sense that they've been holding him back and using other guys first.

"We've obviously discussed it. We've toured the sub-continent before and come across that type of situation - but it's something we'll talk about."

Smith is encouraged by South Africa's five wins from five attempts so far in the tournament.

"We've had a few different challenges, and it was good for us to play on a surface like this and beat India (on Tuesday) on it," he said.

"For us to be in the final would be terrific. We are professional and clinical, but I think we've proven that we have enough flair and options available to us to be the all-round package.

"This team has come a long way, and we've proven that. How we've played under pressure has been incredible."

Usain Bolt ran the 100 metres in a breathtaking 9.77 seconds - the fastest time in the world this year - at the IAAF Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava.

But the wind was a fraction over the legal limit, meaning the event record of 9.85 set by Bolt's fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell in 2005 still stands.

Britain's Craig Pickering, the 2007 Ostrava champion, ran a superb race to finish second in 10.08.

Meanwhile, Mark Lewis-Francis was fifth in the 100m 'B' race in 10.40.

Lewis-Francis, back after a year out injured, finished two places ahead of fellow Briton Christian Malcolm.

Marilyn Okoro produced the best British performance of the night, winning a closely-contested 800m in a season's outdoor best of 2:00.21.

Okoro just managed to hold off France's Elodie Guegan with another Briton, Jenny Meadows, finishing narrowly behind in 2:00.48.

Elsewhere, Olympic champion Dayron Robles comfortably won the men's 100m hurdles with an impressive time of 13.04, while Ireland's Paul Hession won the 200m.

Four former Bath players will face a Rugby Football Union (RFU) disciplinary panel charged with conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game.

Michael Lipman, Alex Crockett, Andrew Higgins and Justin Harrison will face the panel on a date yet to be decided.

The quartet will all answer charges including taking prohibited substances and refusing to take a drugs test.

Lipman, Crockett and Higgins have denied the claims and say any charges will be "vigorously contested".

The RFU's announcement comes two weeks after club captains Lipman, 29, and Crockett, 27, along with Higgins, 27, walked out of Bath in protest at claims they avoided drug tests on three occasions in the aftermath of an end-of-season party.

They were due to face an internal hearing at Bath but quit before it commenced, saying "scurrilous and unsubstantiated allegations" had forced their exit.

Former Australia international Harrison, 35, announced his retirement from the game on 20 May in the wake of stories alluding to an incident in a west London bar on the night of Bath's end-of-season party.

The RFU has continued its investigations into the affair and now believes there is a case to answer.

Sports solicitor Richard Mallett released a statement on behalf of Lipman, Crockett and Higgins which said: "We are extremely surprised and disappointed both by the RFU's decision to convene a disciplinary panel and the terms of their statement.

"Any charges brought by the RFU will be vigorously contested. This is a matter that we take very seriously and will do everything possible in order to clear our names.

"For legal reasons we are unable to comment further at this stage."

If the panel finds against them, Lipman, Crockett and Higgins could receive longer bans than the two-year suspension given to their former Bath team-mate Matt Stevens, who admitted taking cocaine.

Bath chief executive Bob Calleja also issued a statement, saying: "The club treats matters relating to drugs very seriously and we are perfectly satisfied that we acted correctly in requiring the players to explain themselves at an internal disciplinary hearing.

"They chose not to do so and, so far as we are concerned, our internal process is at an end, the players no longer being employed by the club."
